Safeguarding at St Patrick's

Our commitment

Everyone who ministers in the parish — clergy, staff, and volunteers — works on the basis that safeguarding is the responsibility of every member of the parish. We recognise the personal dignity and rights of children, young people, and adults at risk, and we will protect and respect these at all times.

In line with Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency policy, we:

• require all parish volunteers working with children or adults at risk to undergo DBS checking and safeguarding training;
• maintain accurate records of checks, training, and safer-recruitment processes;
• respond promptly and in confidence to any concerns raised;
• report any allegations of abuse to the diocesan safeguarding team and, where required, to the statutory authorities;
• review our practice annually and take part in diocesan audit processes.

Raising a concern

If you are worried about the safety of a child, young person, or vulnerable adult — whether the concern relates to a member of the parish or to anyone else in their lives — please do not hesitate to speak up. You can:

• contact the parish safeguarding representative in confidence;
• contact the Diocese of Northampton safeguarding office directly;
• in an emergency, call the police on 999.

You do not need to be certain that something is wrong. If something is worrying you, it is right to ask.

If you have been affected

If you yourself have been abused or harmed by a member of the Catholic Church, in this parish or any other, we want to hear from you. The diocesan safeguarding office will listen in confidence, offer support, and take any steps you wish to take. You can also contact the Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency directly.

Safe Spaces — independent support

Many people affected by church-related abuse feel isolated, unsure who to trust, or worried about being judged. Safe Spaces is a free, independent, remote helpline and online support service for adults who have experienced abuse by someone in the Church.
